Talking to a friend one of us mentioned the quote ‘And the pig got up and slowly walked away‘. Neither of us could remember any more about where it came from, and could only recall the preceding line ‘You can tell a man who boozes by the company he chooses‘.
One of those things you just have to look up!
However the internet has details of various versions of the song. Folk and Traditional Song Lyrics has the title as The Famous Pig Song and claim the lyrics were written by Clarke Van Ness with music by F. Henri Klickmann.
The Muppets featured the song with Fozzie Bear singing in one of their shows. Harry Belafonte also recorded a version of the song.
Here is one version of the lyrics, and a recording of Frank Crumit singing.One evening in October, when I was one-third sober,
An’ taking home a ‘load’ with manly pride;
My poor feet began to stutter, so I lay down in the gutter,
And a pig came up an’ lay down by my side;
Then we sang ‘It’s all fair weather when good fellows get together,’
Till a lady passing by was heard to say:
‘You can tell a man who “boozes” by the company he chooses’
And the pig got up and slowly walked away.
