A few weeks ago I noticed a ‘Coming Soon‘ type message for BBC3 HD on channel 105 of my Samsung HD television. There was no indication of when transmission would start on Freeview from the Stockland Hill transmitter.
Earlier this evening I spotted a post on Twitter saying the new BBC HD channels had launched. It seems BBC3 HD, BBC4 HD, CBBC HD and CBeebies HD are now available on Sky, Freeview, Freesat, and Virgin Media providing of course you have HD capable equipment.
I don’t have Sky TV or Freesat and there is no cable TV to get Virgin out here in the sticks, so I rely on Freeview.
I went off to my television to take a look at the new HD channels. BBC3 was there but BBC4 wasn’t. Perhaps my TV set needed retuning? I tried but still no BBC4 HD. What was going on?
A search of the internet turned up the web site UK Free TV which has details of what is transmitted on what frequency. UK Free TV brought the following unwelcome news.
The Stockland Hill (Devon, England) mast is not one of the extended Freeview HD (COM7 and COM8) transmitters, it does not provide these high definition (HD) channels: Al Jazeera HD, BBC Four HD, BBC News HD, CBeebies HD.
So those of us who rely on Stockland Hill are going to be denied getting a whole raft of high definition terrestrial TV channels. It looks like those in Dorset who get their Freeview DVB-T2 signals from the Mendip transmitter up in Somerset, or the Rowridge transmitter on the Isle of Wight, will get the extra HD channels.
For those who can get them the Freeview HD channels are:
- 101 BBC 1 HD
- 102 BBC 2 HD
- 103 ITV HD
- 104 Channel 4 HD
- 105 BBC 3 HD
- 106 BBC 4 HD
- 107 BBC News HD
- 108 Al Jazeera HD
- 73 CBBC HD
- 74 CBeebies HD
