I had BBC Radio Somerset on in the car on Sunday, it was one of those ‘Countdown of the music charts in xxxx‘ shows, in this instance xxxx was 1962.
One of the tunes they played was Clinton Ford singing ‘Fanlight Fanny the frowsy night club queen‘. I had not heard of either the singer or the song before.
‘Fanlight Fanny‘ is one of those slightly bawdy music hall type songs, and Clinton Ford seemed to take obvious delight in regularly repeating the word ‘Fanny‘.
I looked up ‘Fanlight Fanny’ and it seems it was originally sung by George Formby in the 1939 film ‘Trouble Brewing‘.
Both Formby’s and Clinton’s versions are available on YouTube and can be heard below. The George Formby one is a clip from the film itself.
i don’t think I have come across the word ‘frowsy‘ before. The on-line Colins Dictionary defines it as:
- untidy or unkempt in appearance; shabby
- ill-smelling; frowsty
