Have you traveled past the bus depot along Commercial Road in Weymouth and noticed the tramlines running up the middle of the carriageway?
These date from the days when trains ran through the streets of Weymouth from the town’s railway station to the quay and back again.
Officially known as the Weymouth Harbour Tramway regular services ceased in 1987 but occasional special journeys were made until 1999.
The video below shows a trip along the tramway made in December 1994. It is interesting to see British Transport Police stopping the traffic in King Street so that the diesel locomotive can cross from the station, past B&Q, and into Commercial Road. It is also rather amusing to watch them physically moving badly parked cars so the train can get by.
